Photon-counting CT opens doors in oncology imaging
The ability of radiologists at the University Hospital Pilsen to observe tumor development and metastasis in cancer patients has taken a leap forward, according to radiologist Professor Ji艡铆 Ferda.
Coronary stenosis assessment prior to a transcatheter aortic valve replacement 鈥搑evascularization?
A 62-year-old male patient with severe symptomatic low-flow, low-gradient aortic stenosis was scheduled for transcatheter aortic valve replacement. A coronary CT angiography was performed prior to the procedure, using an ultra-high resolution scan mode due to the patient鈥檚 high coronary calcium load.
Neuroradiologists are won over by photon-counting CT
The improved resolution offered by photon-counting technology is a game changer for neurologists at Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam, says lead researcher Professor Aad van der Lugt.
A small pulmonary nodule in an obese patient
A 60-year-old female patient with severe obesity (300 kg body weight) was admitted to the hospital due to sepsis and acute renal failure. A lung X-ray was performed and revealed a small lesion at the level of the right pulmonary hilus with an unclear nature. A contrast enhanced CT was requested for further investigation.

Severe emphysema treated with endobronchial valves
A 53-year-old male patient, suffering from severe emphysema and hyperinflation, was treated with endobronchial valve deposition 鈥 an interventional procedure aiming to reduce the lung volume in order to improve ipsilateral diaphragmatic motion and subsequently, the patient鈥檚 respiratory condition. An UHR chest CT was indicated for post-procedural evaluation.
A massive paraspinal dermal hemangiosarcoma 鈥 palliative or surgical therapy?
A 16-year-old female dog, suffering from a massive paraspinal mass on her left lower back for the past 6 months, was referred for palliative treatment as the mass was considered nonresectable due to its size and location. A contrast CT was performed to assess the extent of the mass, as well as its relationship to the surrounding tissues and the lumbar spine.
Small bowel infarction secondary to an acquired diaphragmatic hernia
A 75-year-old male patient presented to the emergency department with an acute onset of epigastric pain radiating to the left upper quadrant, obstipation and numerous episodes of vomiting. A CT examination of the abdomen and pelvis with contrast was immediately performed for evaluation.
Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension
A 68-year-old female patient, who had undergone a balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) four months ago, returned to the hospital for her second scheduled treatment session. A dual energy chest CT was requested to evaluate the lung perfused blood volume (LungPBV) and the pulmonary arteries prior to treatment.
Cystic echinococcosis in a child
A 13-year-old boy, suffering from epigastric pain, nausea and vomiting, with aggravation after meals over the past three days, came to the hospital. An ultrasound examination revealed a large mass in the right hepatic lobe. A CT examination was performed for differential diagnosis.
Unrepaired persistent truncus arteriosus in an adult
A 27-year-old female patient came to the hospital complaining of a mild edema developing in both of her legs, for no obvious reason, over the past two weeks. A previous diagnosis of 鈥渃ongenital heart disease鈥 in her childhood was reported, however no details could be provided. A chest CT with contrast was requested for further evaluation.
